Simpler recipe: 0. Start Emacs: emacs -Q. 1. Visit any remote file (in any format): C-x C-f /user@host:/path-to-file. 2. From now on, any attempt to visit some iso-latin-1-dos file give the abnormal results described in the OP. -- Dani Moncayo
