bug#9039: 24.0.50; dired "f" fails on directory that begins with a space

starting from `emacs -Q':

Create a directory that begins with space.
Visit the parent directory in dired.
Move to the line that references the space-beginning directory
hit "f"
Emacs fails to descend.

If Emacs crashed, and you have the Emacs process in the gdb debugger,
please include the output from the following gdb commands:
    `bt full' and `xbacktrace'.
