I guess you have set some `display-time' variable so as to run
`mail-source-check-pop' intentionally or not intentionally.
What's the value of `display-time-mail-function'?  The default
is nil.  Otherwise, doesn't `display-time-string-forms' contain
a form that runs `mail-source-check-pop'?
