(gdb) p desired_matrix->rows
$1 = (struct glyph_row *) 0x102087e00
Current language:  auto; currently minimal
(gdb) p desired_matrix->nrows 
$2 = -306783372

nrows do seem off the chart...

Do you mean --no-splash?  No difference.
