Maybe you could say what button you are referring to.
Since your report mentions rcirc major mode, I'm going to guess this was
in rcirc. I did

emacs -Q -f rcirc

and mouse-1 clicked on "http://www.freenode.net";, and it just opened
in firefox as expected.
