Yes, that’s right.  My patch is against the original version of the code.  When 
the hang occurs, it gets broken after .5sec by the timeout.

Your change doesn’t work presumably because the system’s event loop is affected 
by the lost events just the same.

Not replacing the event loop unless necessary is probably a good idea, even if 
it does not address the present issue.
