"Others" is apparently Drew, because wasamasa told you to report this to Projectile.
Projectile uses call-process-shell-command, which runs the process synchronously. It could switch to using start-process-shell-command, or at least provide an option to do so, to run the tags regeneration asynchronously.
That would raise the question, however, of properly notifying the user when the process has finished.
Nothing to do here in Emacs, closing.
