Thanks for chasing it up! I'd totally forgotten about this. I haven't noticed 
it in quite a long time now, possibly
since upgrade to Emacs 24 some time ago (but I've changed a lot of other 
things, so no clue if that's what fixed it).

For reference, I'm now running:
"GNU Emacs 24.4.1 (x86_64-apple-darwin13.4.0, NS apple-appkit-1265.21) of 
2014-10-20 on builder10-9.porkrind.org"
on OSX 10.9.5

and it appears to be completely fine on several fonts.
