> It should not be "an error" to use `face' in a font-locked buffer. FWIW, I agree. That's a big part of the motivation behind my proposal to add *** Several text-property planes in etc/TODO. But currently the only "solution" to the above problem is `font-lock-face` (tho it only solves the problem if it's OK for your face to be disabled when font-lock-mode is disabled). Stefan
