Tom,

Could you please reply with a bug report that was generated right after the bug 
occurred?

Enabling the stack trace (help->diagnose->enter debugger on error) would be 
helpful.  If you get a stack trace, send it along as well.

The following might help reproduce this more quickly:

(savehist-mode 0)
(setq savehist-autosave-interval 1) ;; set interval to one sec
(savehist-mode 1)

I do not reproduce, and this seems actionable, as we are in the final stages of 
preparing the Emacs 25.1 release (and Aquamacs 3.3).
