This is so very strange.
I just wrote this, and then I for a very different reason (had nothing to do 
with each other) tried to add

\property Voice.scriptHorizontal = ##t

And suddenly the barlines disappeared. Everything worked just like I requested 
for. But, ofcourse, this must be some sort of bug.

On my lilypond (1.3.149) input/test/script-horizontal.ly has no bar lines.
