Details:

Jason originally found a bug in sort.sh:
assertion "dst->this == dst" failed: file "src/data/case.c", line 219,
function "case_copy"

John pointed out that it was reproducible (and more) with --enable-debug on
configure.

The attached patch fixes all the problems I found.  (I already checked in
some obvious fixes.)
