SCUBA DIVING
Most people think of the tropics
when they think of scuba diving but
Vancouver has some of the best cold
water scuba diving in the world.
Scuba divers plunge the frigid
waters between Vancouver Island
and the mainland to view
spectacular marine species like
wolf eels and octopus, as well
as a brilliant red coral found
in few other places in the world.
Cates Park in Deep Cove and
Whytecliff Park near Horseshoe
Bay are popular diving sites,
and many Vancouver scuba
enthusiasts get their feet wet
here first. On the Sunshine
coast, the jagged coastal fjord
of Jervis Inlet near Powell
River provides a stunning
backdrop for finding a sunken
mermaid that has been submerged
by local diving enthusiasts.
Some shipwrecks off the Malaspina
Strait still yield buried
treasure! |
BIRD WATCHING
Bird watchers won't want to
miss Brackendale, on the way
to Whistler,especially during
winter months when thousands
of bald eagles line the banks
of the Squamish, Cheakamus
and Mamquam rivers, feeding
on the carcasses of chum
salmon that have returned to
their spawning grounds from
the Pacific Ocean. An official
count held in mid-January of
1994 recorded the largest
number of eagles ever seen
in North America. |
LIGHTHOUSE PARK
A perfect place to hold
hands. Located just off of
Marine Drive (at Beacon
Lane) in West Vancouver
near Horseshoe Bay.
Seventy-five hectares of
virgin temperate rain
forest, Lighthouse Park
is home to some of the
largest Douglas Firs in
Vancouver. Numerous
trails to explore.

HOCKEY NIGHT IN CANADA : VANCOUVER CANUCKS
The Canadian love of hockey has supported the National
Hockey League's Vancouver Canucks franchise since
the mid-70's. Debate over the team wins and losses
eigns hot and heavy in the media, and on the talk
shows. The spring of 1995, the Canucks captured the
imagination of the entire province, when they came
within a goal of winning the cherished Stanley Cup.

next game, please call 604.899.4610.

CANADIAN FOOTBALL : BC LIONS
The BC Lions, who play in the 60,000-seat domed
BC Place stadium, were Canadian Football League
champions in 1994. The football season runs from
June to November, culminating in the Grey Cup.
Canadian football is played with three downs, compared
with four in American football, and takes place on a
longer and wider field than US teams use. Aficionados
claim it makes the Canadian game faster and more exciting,
with more passing. Judge for yourself. For tickets or
