bash w/ sed error

I am not sure whether or not this is a bug with sed or bash
(or maybe it isn't even a bug)

I get the following error several times when trying to run a
makefile:

/bin/sh: invalid character 32 in exportstr for sed -e /^MACHINE..*

sh points to bash version 2.0.4.12
Sed is version 3.0.2

I am running mandrake linux version 7.2.

Please confirm that this is a bug or my own stupidity.
