just curious, when you guys view the man page for tr, printf, echo,
etc. and you get to

       character with octal value NNN (1 to 3 octal digits)

       ^Hb      backslash
       a
       .^Hc....  audible BEL
       k
       s.TP    form feed
       p
       a
       c^Hnew line
       e      return

do you also see a big jumble? especially in emacs' M-x man. Hmm,
$ man tr>&-
<standard input>:37: warning: numeric expression expected (got `N')
<standard input>:49: a newline character is not allowed in an escape name
<standard input>:52: a newline character is not allowed in an escape name
<standard input>:61: cannot use newline as a starting delimiter

[I am not using the newest versions however, anyways, check all pages
with such a table.]
