The master files _must_ be written in binary mode, so that they always 
have the Unix-style LF-only end-of-line format.  This should be so even 
if the directory is mounted in text mode.

(Doing so also gives you an additional bonus of being able to share the 
msater files with Unix and GNU/Linux systems.)
