Does it work if you use the fixup procedure that I mentioned, after
you create the tar file? If not, that suggests that the problem is
in your copy of tar, not in the method used to invoke it.
It does work. If I take the .tar.gz file that is created by the archiver
program and unpack it it goves me the ``trailing garbage'' error. If I
follow your tip and then tar the result with --blocking-factor=1 then
unpacking the result will *not* give the error, as you noted.

I doubt it. I just used your program here, and it worked fine: it created
a tar image with a blocking factor of 1, and then compressed it.
So I understand you correctly, that when you did that you got no
trailing 0's error (or warning, I suppose)? My tar is not ancient, anyway.
address@hidden ftpmaint]$ tar --version
tar (GNU tar) 1.13.17
It says copyright 2000.
I'm using tar 1.13.25 and gzip 1.3.3 to create the tar image. Quite
possibly you are using older versions, and that might be affecting the
problem.
I'll get the latest tar and the latest gzip, and try that (it might be a
few days). Thanks.
