You'll get better results if you make the test scripts executable; I
overlooked the permissions (they're bad in CVS and CVS doesn't allow
changing permissions).

That would appear to be a problem with your man version or your automake.
grep installs man pages where automake wants them. The only thing grep
does regarding the installation of man pages is
man_MANS = grep.1 fgrep.1 egrep.1
