I'm pretty sure that its curses that is the issue: I get the same message from
less()
and vim(). In fact, it doesn't only *complain* that my terminal emulation is
broken,
it jetisons my TERM, gives me a list of default alternatives and then selects
ansi
for me.

Another contributor, address@hidden, suggested properly that Cygwin is
a volunteers project, which I respect, but this change seems to be an explicit
policy decision which reflects the anti-AT&T (yes, I can't help myself: emacs,
tar, and csh instead of vi, cpio, and ksh) of certain big cats at GNU (whose
initials are RS). Maybe I'm slipping into deranged megalomaniac thinking,
but it's just that with bash, GNU had done so much good in patching up the
old rivalries, that I was thinking we were prepared for the clash with
Microsoft.

Or let me put it another way. Everytime I use linux or cygwin, I tell myself
that the
world simply has to understand that this is better than the garbage that
Microsoft
puts out. But when I, with 20 years of Unix experience, can't get my terminal
to behave the way I want to, then I can't expect to be able to convince my
company
that MSwindows is for amateurs.
