You can avoid the creation of the "messages" file by using the option
"-o /dev/null".
Changing msgfmt to not create an output file in some cases would make
its behaviour inconsistent. If --statistics option only affects the
amount of text output, as it does currently, the documentation is
easier, and the program is easier to use.
