On my old system (Mandrake 8.2, ext3-fs), I made backups of all
important files using
tar cjf ~/foo.tar.bz2
I opened some of them with KDE's ark and they were ok. I copied them
to /mnt/windows. Then I repartitioned the Linux-partitions with
cfdisk, installed Debian, didn't like it, reinstalled MDK 8.2 (with
reiserfs this time), copied *.tar.bz2 back to ~.
Now, tar xjpf and bzip2 --test report CRC-errors on ALL my *.tar.bz2,
ark crashes when I try to open them! bzip2recover did produce some
files, but these too were unreadable, again data-integrity error. Of
course, Winzip can't open them either.
How is that possible?
I use GNU-tar 1.13.25.
