If you are worried about common symbols, pass `--warn-common' to the
linker. There is no need to artificially inflate the size of the
resulting binary with gratuitous entries in the data section.
Furthermore, when suggesting changes, you should always supply a
rational for the changes. Your response shows that you knew that this
was a controversial change.
As for renaming `program_name', that is a standard GNU extension that
many programs rely on.
