I enjoyed reading the tutorial/manual for tar which
documents version
1.13.19 of GNU `tar'. Just wanted to say thank you to
the
authors. Enjoy you virtual beer! ;-)

A small request. The manual did not say why 'tar' is
called 'tar'. I
have written a subsection for this. Please consider
adding it to the
manual.

Why 'tar'is called 'tar'?
-------------------------
The tar program was originally used to create system
backups on
tapes. These backups were known as Tape ARchives and
hence the name
tar.
