The GNU tar issues that you mentioned in your email have been
addressed in the latest test version of GNU tar,
<ftp://alpha.gnu.org/gnu/tar/tar-1.13.25.tar.gz>.  If not, please
write to <address@hidden>.  We are working on getting a new official
release out sometime in this millennium (new maintainers were
announced about a week ago).

You mentioned problems with 'configure' guessing your machine type.
This should be fixed by replacing tar 1.13.25's config.guess and
config.sub with the latest versions
<ftp://ftp.gnu.org/gnu/config/config.guess> and
<ftp://ftp.gnu.org/gnu/config/config.sub>.  If this doesn't work,
please report a bug to <address@hidden>.  It would help if you could
send a suggested fix that we could forward to address@hidden
