Just some responses...
1. re: SMART registers. I don't thing we have smartmon-ux installed, but
i'll check to see if there are any other disk monitoring programs installed.
2. re: multi proc. Yup it has 2 cpus
3. re: 1.3.5. Hm. It's a production enviornment, so I doubt they'll let me
install a dev version.

Have you verified the S.M.A.R.T. registers of the disks?

Do you really have a multiprocessor machine?
Perhaps you could change your kernel, or even recompile it from sources...

The newest devel version seems to be gzip 1.3.5, perhaps...
The bug address is bug-gzip at gnuorg but it probably leads to bug-gnu-utils
anyway...
