Well, yes, you might have a point here.

More or less. Deviating from upstream for things which upstream might
not consider as a bug. Currently, each and every of the patches
included in the Debian diff will surely be part of the next gettext
release, and that's always a desirable thing for a package.
Or maybe it's just that changing the umask seems ugly to me.
Anyway, I hope that the author will look at this and will come with a
solution which is both portable and elegant, as he usually does :-)
Ok, I'm going to leave this open until I hear from him.
