Back in 1993, I used GAWK on MS-DOS and at that
time, GAWK was able to handle more than 100 lines.

say that the GAWK implementation was compiled with
the wrong "memory model" libraries. Use the GAWK
that comes with Cygwin or one that was compiled
with DJGPP.
