I have patch version 2.5.4 which I am using to apply
patches to my kernel source base (2.6.9-1.667).
I would like to be able to use the -p<number> in order
to extract the file name to patch. But this does no work
when the patch file does not contain a leading slash in
the file names. For kernel patches, almost always
the file names are something like:
linux-1/scripts/kconfig/conf.c
Since I am in the directory /usr/src/linux when I am applying
the patches, I end up manually cutting and pasting the
file name sans the leading linux-1/ (for example), in order
to apply the patch.
How about an option which would simply remove
N leading components from the file name regardless of
whether the file name starts with a slash or not?

JD
