This is a bad idea for another reason than was stated by other replies.  A 
tab will be replaced by UP TO eight spaces.  If the spot on the line where a 
tab would be inserted was at position 38, two spaces are inserted to move to 
position 40.  If the line position is at 32, eight spaces are inserted.  So 
you can't just blindly replace a tab with eight spaces.
