i cannot use -i option with grep with -r

i cannot use -i option with grep with -r |

Hi,
I cannot grep with -I option. The search terminates with following error
msg.
$ grep -ir 'hello' *
*** glibc detected *** free(): invalid next size (fast): 0x082c5260 ***
Aborted
Can you please fix this up. Or suggest me a bypass if you already have one.
