grep --color

Hi,
This is likely the wrong place to ask, but:
When one uses grep and the --colour option one of course gets the
greped string in color when output to the screen.
It does not do this when output to a file or piped to a program
like od -cx or even to less (more).
I understand this makes sense as one would not want to contaminate the
output standard I/O.
My question is, can one over ride this "feature" and retain the
colored string when piped to less for example.
