Sounds like the same problem I have, but you're using
Linux, aren't you?

Ahhh... your using gtk-2.0!!

gtk-2.0 also accepts only utf-8 characters. OK - so
how do we make the .gmo files contain only utf-8
characters? is there an option in msgfmt?

To speak for my self: I do this manually! I think maybe
emacs have some kind of macro for this, but I think the
manual way is just as good.
