David's and Douglas' arguments convince me that student and amateur are less
than ideal. I don't like the American term "rookie" either; it's not in
common use in English English.

For the (0) class I have another suggestion, "dodgy". The word conveys a
certain wry humour and lovable roguishness, so is unlikely to cause offence.
It is applicable to the scenario Douglas describes, where you make one
howler that destroys your rating. It also equally suitable for those who
make a series of small errors. I find it less condemnatory than "awful!"
and less snide than "interesting". I don't know if it's a bit too British
though. Does "dodgy" mean anything outside the UK?

Of Douglas' other suggestions, I think "casual player" has a lot of merit,
but should be above beginner.

I think you should stick with the intermediate - advanced - expert - world
class progression. Those of us trying to improve from intermediate are all
familiar with these terms, and it's very satisfying to score "expert" and
"world class".

ET was Snowie's little joke IIRC, on the basis that if you're better than
world class then you must be out of this world. GnuBg could keep it or we
could try to come up with something better. World Class ++ is boring though,
unless you are a programmer or have read 1984. I'll toss a couple of terms
into the mix to stimulate the creative juices; awesome, supernatural,
superb, genius, and of course, CHEAT!

So, my favoured progression is now:

dodgy - beginner - casual player - intermediate - advanced - expert - world
class - ET?
