I've seen both used. gnubg currently uses "pip count" consistently.

I did a search on google and both "pipcount" and "pip count" returned
articles written by people with English as their native language.
The backgammon glossary <URL:http://www.bkgm.com/glossary.html#P> writes
"pip count"...

Any comments from the mailing list readers?!
