This is because gnubg writes a text to the status line ("The score
(after 0 games) is: gnubg 1, user 1 (match to 7 points)") that is wider
than the status bar. This is a known bug.

If you continue the game you'll be able to resize it later (one the very
wide text has be replaced with, say, "gnubg moves 24/13").
