I have more information about this - perhaps it is findable; it's not much
of a problem anywya.

$ gnubg -t
(No game) exit

hangs (but can be got out of with ctrl-C), whereas

$ gnubg -t < emptyfile

exits fine, where emptyfile is an empty file.
