The socket support was created with unix (posix) sockets. Windows systems
uses something called winsock and unix sockets can not be directly ported
to winsock right out of the box.

If you're talking about Linux you can do this:
Start a master-gnubg, and select one of the players to be external, and
make a name for your socket. (/usr/home/gnubg/socket). Then start another
gnubg (slave) which uses an external player for the other player. Type the
same socket name as in the master. You can now have this two gnubg-sessions
to play against each other.

Does this work over TCP/IP as well?
