Firs I'd like to give you the link to a tutorial on using gnubg:
http://www.bkgm.com/gnu/AllAboutGNU.html

As to the slightly transparent dark checkers, yes, I have noticed this
about the default checkers, it is because they are set with the opacity
on. My suggestion is to go to the Settings menu, click on Appearance,
then choose the Designs tab at the top of the window that opens. In the
list on the left is a list of pre-designed boards. Just choose the one
you like, or if you prefer, feel free to modify the settings.

Albert

i love the gnu bg.
i would like to see the dices in a strait line and not one up one down
'cause when i push the dices to roll i need to push always in another
place.

another thing the brown checkers are slightly invincible.

and the most important thing when i play in 1200 X 960 or something like
this
the board is very small and cannot be magnituted like jelly fish.

the options are very detailed and good.

well done !!!
