\xe0 is an a with an accent acute (or maybe it's an accent grave).
This should not be generating an error, as there should be support for
this character notation. This seems strange, how does the Solaris
version expect to receive characters outside the 0..127 range? Note
that as it.po is extended, previous \xnn sequences have been replaced
with the literal character, so the processing needs to deal with both 
8bit characters and hex escaped characters.
