It's due to the drawing code (render.c) being in your non-gui build, I think 
this is so commands like "save to png" will still work in the cli build.  I'm 
not sure that's necessarily a good idea (some would say the cli build should be 
minimal).  I'll change it anyway.

Well, showingGray is defined in gtkboard.c which is not used when building CLI 
only.

Probably there's just something to ifdef out ...
