Oh, no, sorry.  I'm accessing a Linux host via a Cygwin xterm.  Some
sort of term incompatibility causes almost everything quoted in all
program output (I assume with a backticks-singlequote combination,
though that's from memory and I haven't reexamined it since the problem
started) to be replaced with the a-with-circumflex.  You should see my
man pages.  I'm not sure exactly what it is since I can type both
backticks and single quotes on the command line and in vi without problems.

It's usable but annoying, so I've been upgrading my Cygwin once a month
for the last six months or so in hopes someone else would have noticed
the problem and fixed it, but I've yet to become so motivated as to even
report the issue to them, much less look into it more deeply.
