but I'm not able to do it.  Simon, perhaps you could volunteer.

Could you please prepare an example project, quickly recap the problem,
explain your needs, and then implement the user side of the solution.
I mean your solution would use no-yet-existent features of Autoconf,
but you'd explain what you are expecting from Autoconf (and Automake).

This would be a form of detailed design document.

Do you have time and interest to do this?
