Neat!  I'd like this in gnulib, so I can use it in my projects to make
automatic releases during development cycles.  I've been thinking of how
to achieve that for some time, but this seems to be a good solution.

I'd prefer to avoid any non-numeric symbols though, doesn't autoconf
gnits mode complain?
