I'm also interested in seeing it fixed to work with newer versions of git.
~ The (as-yet-unreleased) 1.5.5 release supports 'git describe --match
"v[0-9]*"' to filter on only tags that look like version numbers; useful
when there are other more recent but less relevant tags in the history.
