Yes. On the IRIX and Solaris machines, the earlier test failures coincide
with the missing lines in /etc/services. On AIX, http succeeded, although in
/etc/services the port 80 is called "www", not "http" - maybe they have a
separate table of services or alias names somewhere.

No.

Why only https then? I would use a reasonably complete list, and precompile
it using gperf (to speed up the search).
