Thanks Eric for helping me to fix this last bit.  And thanks again to you as well, Bruno.
 
I changed the mode for git to binary.  If anyone is interested/has the same problem, I used the step in outlined in this page:

"CRLF Issues
Git by default uses binary mode to transfer files.  On windows to prevent line break issues the option "core.autocrlf" can be used to convert CR+LF to LF automatically.

ex. git config core.autocrlf=true"

That means you checked out the files with DOS line endings (CRLF), but you
are executing under a binary mount point (where bash expects only LF, and
is choking on the CR).  You need to be consistent in your choice of line
endings (either check out in binary mode, or check out into a text mount).
