Timestamps were not the problem. The native make(1) worked fine (i.e.
did not try to invoke $(YACC)) when building inside the source tree.

But that's a slippery slope. Next, it's GCC, to build C99 code. Then,
CMake, because no one knows how to write M4. Then it's, "Dude, why don't
you just run Linux?"

No, only madness lies down that path....
