Looking through my old emails, I came across this one.  I was unable to
parse what you meant in that paragraph,

but this makes it sound like you wanted a way to override GNULIB_SRCDIR
to avoid using git?  If so, what's wrong with 'env -u GNULIB_SRCDIR
bootstrap'?  If this is still an issue for you, would you mind giving
more details about a scenario where your patch would make sense?
