Since when is this stuff not about overkill?  :-D

For many reasons (not the least of which being "let's blow
everything away and start over" recovery method), it is
still better to create the project in a directory separate
from the original file(s).  Given that, and given that you must
not auto-edit original files, and given the obscurity of
the gl_INIT_PACKAGE([gettext], [$VERSION_NUMBER])
wizardry, and add to that the fact it is generally
better to follow recommended practices so others have good templates
to follow, my plan is to sed the source file, replacing the version.
It will make it easier to comprehend the resultant project, too.
The template can be stored either in the bootstrap script or in a
file named configure.ac or whatever else you like.
