the immediate cause appears to be that I include unistd.h after some
other headers (specifically,
#include <alloca.h>
#include <stdlib.h>
#include <sys/types.h>
#include <stdbool.h>
#include <windows.h>
) and then it bails out.
are you sure this is right?!
